Every player is dealt two cards that they can look at. These cards are called your hole cards. The first round of betting occurs at this time. You can either fold your hand (throw it away and save your money), pay to play (place the minimum bet), or raise (increase the amount required for others to continue playing).
Next, three community cards are placed face up in the middle of the table. These cards are called the flop. Everyone can use the community cards to make their hole cards stronger. Another round of betting occurs at this time. This time, however, you can fold, check, or raise. Checking means that you continue playing without paying more money.
Now another community card is placed face up on the table. This card is called fourth street or the turn. Another round of betting happens in which you can fold, check, or raise.
At this time, the fifth and final community card is placed face up on the table. This card is called the river. The last round of betting happens now. Again, you can fold, check, or raise.
A Few More Rules...
In Texas Hold 'Em, there are two buttons, or indicators, that move clockwise during the game. One button says Dealer; the other says Big Blind. Regardless of who actually deals the game, the person with the dealer button has the advantage of being the last one to bet.
The person to the left of the person with the dealer button is called the little blind. The little blind is required to place a small forced bet to play in the hand. The amount of the little blind is half of the minimum bet to play. If you were playing 5/10 No Limit Hold 'Em, the amount of the little blind would be $5.
The person to the left of the little blind has the big blind button. This player is called the blig blind. This player is required to place a large forced bet to play in the hand. The amount of the big blind is the minimum bet at the table. If you were playing 5/10 No Limit Hold 'Em, the amount of the big blind would be $10. |
