Women are highly skilled at reading poker tells. Our brains our designed to be mothers. Mothers need to have the ability to look into a crying baby's face and know what is wrong. For billions of years, we, as women, have been practicing reading faces. In her book The Female Brain, Dr. Brizendine says that women actually have "near psychic" abilities to read the most subtle hints and gestures from people.
As a female player, you should learn poker tells in a completely different manner than most of the male-centric poker literature suggests. Most of the great poker tell-reading strategy tells you the science of body language. It encourages you to think like a man--to compartmentalize what you observe. This will hinder your natural abilities and reduce your trust and confidence in yourself.
Going hand-in-hand with women's abilities to read people is our stronger "gut feelings" than men. Dr. Brizendine tells us that the chemicals in a woman's brain prove that "woman's intuition" is not an old wife's tale--it is reality.
How can you use this science to improve your game? Simple. Work on listening to the voice in your head that says, "He thinks I'm trying to bluff him," "He wants me to call his raise," or "He doesn't have squat." That's what a "gut feeling" sounds like, ladies! Of course, studying traditional poker tell science is never a bad idea--but don't forget that one-size tell-reading strategy does not fit all!
Having said that, the first and foremost thing you need to know about reading poker tells is that most of the time your opponent is using the most simple psychology to camouflage a hand...when they are strong, they act weak, and when they are weak, they act strong. Pure and simple. Check out these great tutorial videos...remembering that nature made you a tell-reading prodigy!
